Bankruptcy is a legal proceeding involving a person or business that is unable to repay their outstanding debts.

When a person declares bankruptcy, their assets are turned over to a trustee and the assets used to pay off outstanding debt.

A bankruptcy will stay on a person's credit report for up to 10 years.
